Three ways a code goes missing
The first failure comes before any SMS is sent: the site has no number to give. At 5sim, a number was "unavailable" on 92 of our 150 requests in the 6-month test. On the 58 requests where it did supply one, about 81% produced a code, which leaves 31.3% overall. Its stock counter sat frozen at 4,127 for three weeks, so the stock on display was not a live count.
The second is a number that is supplied but does not get the code. SMSPVA received 34% of codes in the same test, at a median of 190 s and about three attempts per code, and far fewer codes came through on the biggest platforms than elsewhere. The lab reads that pattern as burned numbers, over-used and blocked at the source. The third is the edge of the catalogue: VirtualSMSNumbers missed five of 150 codes, all in the rarest countries. How long to wait for the code
In our 6-month test, the median delay was 11 s at VirtualSMSNumbers, 18 s at ReadyOTP, 27 s at OTPAtlas and 45 s at SMSario; sms-man.com, kept out of the ranking, was at 25 s. The slow end was 5sim at 65 s, onlinesim.io at 150 s and SMSPVA at 190 s. Every request had 20 minutes: a code that arrived later counted as a failure. The record gives only the median, so some received codes at each site took longer than the figure shown, and no maximum delay is published.
What happens to your money when the code never comes
Sites handled missed codes in different ways during the 6-month test. VirtualSMSNumbers refunded its five misses automatically, and OTPAtlas refunds automatically when a code does not arrive. At SMSPVA, refunds go through tickets only: we opened 99, with a five-day median to resolution. For ReadyOTP, SMSario and 5sim, the record does not say how missed codes were handled; for SMSario it notes only that the balance is non-refundable and that the minimum deposit is $30.00.
Where a refund exists, check where it goes. Received is not accepted, and our two SMS tests used different protocols
Neither of our SMS tests counted whether the destination service accepted a code; both measured whether it reached the number. Our 1-month test, published on September 8, 2026, recorded 20 of 20 SMS (100%) at each of its 4 scored sites, including VirtualSMSNumbers and SMSario, and found SMSPVA decent with some messages missing. The 6-month test, run from March to August 2026, measured 96.7%, 80% and 34% for those three brands. The protocols differ: 20 services per site with no time limit, delivery times, dates or per-country results recorded, against 150 requests across 10 services and 15 countries with a 20-minute cut-off.
